Did you ever have one of those days (or maybe even several "weeks" of one of those days), that leave you wondering which way the wind is blowing, which direction YOU are headed, and how on earth to even take a single step? Well, if you have, then welcome to my world. Since losing my job due to a re-org and subsequent downsizing, I've been dazed and confused. My regular schedule went away somewhere never to be utilized again, and my poor Sweetie has also been sucked into the miasma of my resulting inertia. Job hunting isn't like it was in the old days, when you could just go on downtown and apply for the job of your choice. Job requirements were lenient, and nobody dreamed of fudging their resumes because in fact... who ever asked to see it anyway? Now, for every job opening in the paper, agency or Internet job site, there are hundreds of responses. Perhaps this explains the crushing lack of responses to my hundreds of time-consuming, hand-tailored cover letters and resumes, custom made for each and every application response... sent along down into the yawning black hole of the internet job process. I have received one (yes, you read that right) one courtesy response from a company who had the good work ethic to at least send me a rejection letter.

Truly it is like the salmon must feel as they swim with every inch of their strength up stream only to face a dam which prevents any further progress...

Anyway, life goes on, and so does my search. I've begun to explore non-profit organizations which cater to science, animals, and of course wildlife & birds. I've been told to use networking... easier said than done since I'm not the world's most social gal unless thrust into it with no escape routes. I figured if/when we move to Iceland I'll do well in an egg farm, driving a forklift and conversing with the chickies.

networking sucks.

same here. i am not a social person. i like being alone. i get more done that way.

i know it's trite, but hang in there. someone will recognize your spectacularness, and hire you.

i wouldn't mind living in iceland. i've been thinking a lot about yellowknife...(canada)...i wanna go north. waaaay north.

i've seen film of iceland, and i like it.

The world around us changes and so do we as we grow older, or so it seems. We are born upside-down and that is when we see life as it really is because as we stand upright, the lens of our eyes reverses things and we go through life never really seeing it as it really is. Notice how kids like to put the top of their head on the floor and look around and laugh. They must know something we have forgotten.

It is very scary out there at the moment. We recently recruited for a data analyst and had a ridiculous number of applicants, many with PhD's! For a DA job? Oh that is so sad and scary. Good luck honey. Lol to the pic of the dig.

Sorry to hear you're having a struggle. At the moment my dad's out of work and starting to get depressed since it's been two months now, but Christmas isn't a good time to find work.

If you can - don't send a CV, go in person. It worked for my husband two years back when he'd been struggling for ages to get a decent job. I don't think most places even bother to read them properly, but if a real person is standing there talking to them it's harder to brush you off. In hubby's case his CV was a bit "wobbly" (self employed for years and no way to prove much) and was kicked back by most places. He got fed up and went in person to the next place on his list, even though they requested written applications only. He started talking to the receptionist, then the boss... they liked him and he had the job there that day!

Your poor thing! I'm so sorry you are stuck in this limbo of job hunting. I'm glad to see you've still got your sense of humor - that photo is quite funny!
I love this sentence you wrote:

That statement is true for a variety of awful life circumstances.
Keep plugging along, my friend, and keep dreaming and planning for that eventual move to Iceland.
I'm a big believer in pursuing our dreams!!
