Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer,
To stop without a farmhouse near,
Between the woods and frozen lake,
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake,
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep,
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

It's four seperate verses, really, but it is and has since childhood been one of my favorite poems.

Amazing how words can evoke images, (but that's the only reason, we all understand each other, I guess) and something about how they are combined here, conjures such a clear vision of that forest, the dark and the cold.

Have to admire anyone who can say exactly what they want to say in just a few words ;-)

Jeanne, welcome to my place - so nice of you to drop by. I do like this poem as well. There is something about the forest and just being still in its presence which I can relate to.

Hi Autumn

Yes, it would be so great to be able to express oneself without verbosity such as I'm prone :-)

The picture I used doesn't have snow but I liked the way it made the woods look deep and dark as the sun was going down.

Keshi, I love your descriptive words. "Enchanted" is a favorite of mine :-) The woods always make one feel alive, no matter what the weather or time of day.

Trace - hope you are feeling a little better this evening. Where ever did you find that "bug" picture - it is the greatest. Hugs to you.

My pleasure purely. I've been lurking a while, and enjoying Iceland. That's an Icelandic sweater in the Gothic Garden, isn't it?

Ah HA - lurking eh? Delighted to have you about.

Yes, my Icelander Love is wearing his beloved Icelandic sweater in the cold of the California fall garden. I almost bought one for myself when we were in Reykjavik and now am kicking myself because I didn't. I'll get one in June - when I return, should they still be selling them during the summer. I've got Iceland fever.
