First, dig a good hole in the firepit, bury the foiled-wrapped meat which has been first stuffed into a burlap bag soaked in water for an hour. Place the lamb-stuffed burlap bag into a chicken-wire cage in order to make it easier to pull from the fire later.
After burying the bag in the pit, line the hole with river rocks, and build a good hot wood fire over the rocks, keeping it stoked roughly 4 hours.
Within mere minutes, the lamb had vanished - down the gullets of hungry campers - hurrying before the yellow jackets could get their fill.
SIMPLY DIVINE.

Wonderful! I food not only delicitous but hid in a hole in the ground, river rocks above and all, very nomad and exciting. Also, you have to be a hero and wait 4 hours for your dinner.
lamb with garlic was best,The Bear, got the first Slice/Bite.MMMMMMMMM GOOD
Grandma(82)helped Grandpa(Ingram)along with Cousin Beryl---Best cooks ever!!!!!!!
Makes me want to move back in the woods and live in a cave. They sure ate good back in the day.
Now, I´m HUNGRY! I´m going to find a lamb and some wood ;-)
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. There are some very fat sheep grazing right next to us.
Take me camping with you next time.
That my dear...Has given me a wonderful Idea!
And I really Really love lamb!
Thanks Terry for this great food tip....G
Freaking yum!
We have been trying to get a trip to Napa for about 3 months but now there is just SO much stuff going on and before you know it the end of the year will be here. Maybe in the spring?? Oh how fun would that be!! I just love meeting fellow bloggers!
BTW...that stuff you're cooking looks good even if it is lamb! LOL...yeah, I know...I don't like anything...lol. Well, except maybe for a nice glass of wine and cheese.
Have a good day...smooches!
That does look divine.
that looks sooo good.
im assuming my invitation got lost in the mail?
Ariel the Thief - We were hardly heros... as we had a lovely time going for a swim at the river down the road while the meat cooked away. Cold clear water to wash off the dirt and camping dust, and to amp up our appetites for the feast later on!
Anonymous - Bears are good at that. It was a lovely group project - both the cooking and the eating!
Tom & Icy - yes, I think I'm beginning to fade away back to the olden days. Good eating, less stress - simple pleasures. Living in a cave has a certain appeal doesn't it? Of course you would need an internet connection...
SOe - you know that is one part of Iceland I can appreciate over here in the states - ~lamb~ yummmm.
Jeanne - You remind me of Wile E. Coyote on the Roadrunner cartoon who swiped sheep :)
Lone Grey Squirrel - I would adore to have a cute little squirrel running up and down the cedars at the campsite. But I find myself remembering your picture of the squirrel and the bear...
Galen - oh boy, I can sense another great post coming up at your place! Don't forget the pictures okay?
Actonbell - it was the camping meal to dream about...
Doug - so eloquently put!
Jillie - Yeah, I know - meat, blech! That's quite alright - just step over here to the wine and cheese table. Brie, stilton, pepper jack, sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, fontina... help yourself, and here's a nice glass of merlot to clear your palate. Napa here we come.
Dr. John - Now it is only a memory.
